I’m a big advocate for limiting screentime. But I’m also for gifting some time on the tablet or game console as a reward for good behavior, showing responsibility, and trying hard at school. In other words, there’s a time and place for screentime in our home. My son especially loves playing the Nintendo Switch when he gets his electronics reward.
I’ve come to love it myself. It’s portable and simple to set up, so he’s not wasting his few minutes of screentime on loading screens and clicking-throughs. We love playing video games together, and the Nintendo Switch gives us a convenient way to do it.
I was given the opportunity recently to test out the brand new Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 for the Nintendo Switch, and I knew my little Mario-lover would be thrilled. We have Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games for the Nintendo Wii, and it’s one he really enjoys playing. The new version is loaded with more than 30 events (some 2D retro and some 3D), so there’s plenty of fun waiting for whoever plays!
The game gets released on November 5th, 2019, just in time for the upcoming holiday season.

What I love most about this game is that it’s easy to jump right in and start playing. You pick your character, choose your event, and go. That’s it. There are no tricky storylines or challenges you have to complete to keep playing. You can keep practicing your favorite events over and over without ever having to play the ones you don’t care for. (In other words, it’s perfect for kids who like instant gratification…you know, like all of ’em.)
The 3D graphics are fun, too. They bring the events to life and it’s fun to see nostalgic Mario and Sonic characters play in the sporting events!
